In Smith County, 16,916 residents speak English less than “very well”. For many, this creates more than a language barrier, it can mean feeling disconnected and unable to fully participate in daily life.
Without a sense of belonging, simple things become overwhelming:
- Navigating citizenship
- Financial stability and upward mobility
- Accessing healthcare and education
- Participating in the community
Monarca Initiative is changing that.
Through Advocacy & Case Management, GED in Spanish, Citizenship Preparation, and Community-Centered Workshops, Bilingual Computer Courses, Folkloric Ballet, English Courses, and Practical Skills & Certification Support, we help families build not only skills, but confidence and connection.
Because when people feel like they belong, everything changes. Belonging fuels transformation. When people feel seen, valued, and supported, they gain the confidence to overcome barriers, take bold steps, and achieve lasting change. Research shows it boosts motivation, engagement, mental health, and success, amplifying the impact of every opportunity.
Flor’s story is one example.
She once doubted her ability to pass the citizenship test. With support and guidance, she found the confidence to succeed and is now a proud U.S. citizen. Today, her daughter is also a citizen, and her husband, who had been eligible for years but felt afraid to begin, is now taking classes and starting his own journey.
This is the ripple effect of belonging.
