PAVE East Texas, formerly known as the Literacy Council of Tyler, believes education is powerful and has the ability to unlock potential at any stage of life. Our programs create transformational opportunities for adult learners, their families, and the greater community.
In Smith County, 61% of adults read at or below an eighth-grade level. By providing free adult education programs, including GED preparation, English language learning, adult basic literacy, and career pathways, PAVE East Texas is breaking cycles of poverty and building a stronger, more skilled workforce for East Texas.
Nine out of ten students obtain a job, receive a promotion, or begin college within a year of completing a PAVE East Texas program. GEDs are earned, English is learned, and families are empowered to build a better future.
Founded in 1990, PAVE East Texas now serves over 1,900 students annually across six counties and has been recognized by the Texas Workforce Commission for exceptional student outcomes, including achieving 100% of Federal Performance Measures in 2024.
