Lone Star Legal Aid

A nonprofit organization

Lone Star Legal Aid's mission is to protect and advance the civil legal rights of the millions of Texans living in poverty by providing free advocacy, legal representation, and community education that ensures equal access to justice. As the largest provider of civil legal aid in Texas and the third largest provider in the United States, Lone Star Legal Aid serves all 32 counties in East Texas. For every legal aid lawyer, nearly 17,000 low-income Texans are left struggling to access the legal help they desperately need-your support can bridge this gap.

In 2024, Lone Star Legal Aid (LSLA) handled over 25,111 cases, benefitting 61,289 individuals. Among these, 32% were domestic violence survivors, 18.5% were seniors (60+), and 7% were Veterans.

Here are some notable cases in 2024:

-helped reduce property taxes and obtained medical coverage and benefits for 92-year-old Veteran of WWII and the Korean War.

Testimonials

"Born in East Texas, I married and moved for my husband's military service, but love turned into control and abuse. Even when I sought medical help, he seemed caring and was trusted with my care. Back in Texas, Lone Star Legal Aid secured my divorce, giving me the freedom to rebuild. I served 30 years as military police, and now, I stand strong, remarried, and forever grateful."

"When my son was diagnosed with a rare brain cancer and denied coverage for the specialist he desperately needed, I felt helpless. LSLA fought for him, and thanks to their efforts, he got approval for 12 vital visits-giving him a chance at the care he needed."
