I grew up in conservative Smith County, Texas, and spent a great deal of my youth feeling alienated and not understanding how to come to terms with that. When I came out, my family and my friends did not receive it well. I felt I had to "lose" so much just to BE ME. When I began seeking community, I didn't find space for people my age or healthy outlets to explore my identity. It seemed the only place I could be around other queer folx was at nightclubs or spaces where building meaningful connections was difficult. I felt lost, afloat. This set my entire life of Advocacy into motion and made me who I am today - it just took a long, lonely road to get there. I look at the youth and adults filling the loving walls of the Glass House Resource Center and I find myself wondering how much farther in life I would have gone, had I had this space to foster growth at that age. Join me in supporting the GH to ensure we can continue to create a safe, inclusive space for this generation to BE.
