I was the kid who always brought home strays—once even a bird for my mom. One day, I found a dog tied to a dumpster and brought him home. That dog, Skip, became my mom’s best friend. When he passed in 2014, she was going through cancer treatment and needed a new companion. We went to a shelter, and she chose Missy Mae. Missy laid by her side, brought comfort, and gave her love until Mama passed a few months later. After that, Missy became my dad’s sidekick—watching football, sharing snacks, and keeping him company until he passed too. Missy was a shelter dog, but she found her purpose and gave so much to our family. That’s why I support Pets Fur People, a no-kill animal shelter in Tyler.
